MOTORCYCLE LUBRICATION: Facts, fiction and folklore

We called around the Portland/Vancouver area to find out what shops and Dealerships
are charging for a VStar oil change. The *BEST* price we could find (4/8/11) was $165
for an oil and filter change using conventional oil. Most were in the $200+ range and
several were considerably higher than $200 if you wanted full synthetic oil. In addition
*NO ONE* was willing to do a VStar oil change while we waited. Pretty much all of them
wanted to keep the bike overnight. For an oil change?!?!!?
PRICES: YAMAHA VSTAR MOTOR OIL AND FILTER CHANGE
INCLUDES A BASIC FLUID ANALYSIS SCREENING
$99.95!
Most VStar Models
Including the popular VStar 650 and 1100 models.
Drain and replace motor oil and replace oil filter
High quality 10W-40 full synthetic oil and WIX filter
NOTES: Viscosity used is per Manufacturer's recommendations
Price includes a new drain plug crush washer and two new filter O-rings
We carry a wide variety of very high quality lubricants and filters
We can substitute our house brand for your brand oil/filter choice for a small up-charge
NOTES: Yamaha VStar oil changes require major surgery compared to most motorcycles
that were designed to use spin-on oil filters. If the guy who did your last oil filter
change didn't treat the exhaust manifold bolts with high temperature anti-seize
compound, stripped the threads, bent one or more bolts or anything along those lines
we are going to have to stop work immediately to talk to you about it. And if an
exhaust manifold bolt head shears off just by turning it counter-clockwise, there
was OBVIOUSLY a problem with the bike before it got here. So please be advised that
we will accept absolutely no liability for problems that were created by the last
guy who worked on your bike and didn't know what he was doing. VStars are so
problematic in this area that we require a signed release of liability before we will
touch one. If you have any doubts at all about the condition of your exhaust manifold
bolts, you may want to consider loosening them a turn or so and then tightening
them back up before you head on over here. That way you'll know that there isn't
going to be a problem.
There may be a small additional charge for O-rings, washers, gaskets, etc. (if needed)
as part of this extensive R&R procedure. You may want to consider having us install
an oil filter relocation kit which will make subsequent oil/filter changes a LOT less
expensive and a LOT less time consuming.
Regrettably, due to the disruptions in the Arab World, there is a $1.00 per quart
of oil used surcharge, which is an extra cost that our suppliers are imposing on us.
This surcharge will add around $3 to your oil change cost and will go away as soon
as this latest, phoney "energy shortage" goes away.
When comparing prices, remember that a screening analysis of your used oil is
included in the above prices.

Yamaha VStar oil change AND an oil filter relocation kit installation
We are an authorized Jardine Performance Products Installer
VStar Owners: make your life a LOT easier! Have us install a very high quality Jardine
oil filter relocation kit plus the above described oil/filter change, all for only
$395.95!!!! That's your TOTAL price! Try beating that price somewhere! Obviously, the
Dealerships aren't interested in doing anything that will make your oil changes less
profitable for them so good luck getting them to come even close to our pricing.
Not only will future oil changes only take 5 minutes and no longer require removing
your exhaust system.... but in addition, because your oil filter is on the outside of
the bike where it belongs, your oil temperatures will run cooler!
And yes, we will do all of this work while you wait. The entire job takes about an
hour. Please read the above note and liability release requirements related to
improperly installed or frozen exhaust manifold bolts.
- THE SMALL PRINT -
The above prices apply to most VStar models.
If you own one, you know that Yamaha designed the VStar in a way that STRONGLY
discourages D.I.Y. maintenance. Most shops and dealerships charge well over $100
to do an oil change and most want to keep your bike overnight! And forget about
trying to get the work done "while you wait" or without an appointment.
We do not disparage our competition but these policies just seem nuts to us....
We'll start work on your VStar as soon as you show up, with or without an appointment.
The oil change will take 1/2 hour or so.. a little longer if the exhaust doesn't
want to come off without a struggle. And you'll be down the road with a smile for
something VERY close to our advertised price. Is that a deal or what?
What does "Express oil change" mean?
We don't believe that nickel-and-diming customers is the way to build a business.
If you need "something special", a drain plug washer or whatever, you'll still be out
the door with a smile for something very close to these advertised prices.
If you're not totally happy, you won't come back and you won't recommend us to your
friends.
"Doing The Right Thing" is good for you and it's good for us!
We will change your old oil FAST and for a lot less dough than you'd pay most anywhere
else!
All of our lubricants meet and usually far exceed Manufacturer's recommendations.
If you are running extended drain interval oils or just want to know the condition of
the oil that's currently in your bike, drop by for a free, no obligation analysis!
