MOTORCYCLE LUBRICATION: Facts, fiction and folklore
The Original Easyrider® Guestbook
Motorcycle Tour Blog and
Motorcycle lubrication forum
There is a lot of fiction and folklore out there regarding lawnmower oil and oil
changes. If you're interested in the facts, here they are:
The "standard" lubricant for a 4-stroke lawnmower is SAE 30.
YES, you can put a multi-viscosity lubricant in a lawnmower.
Your lawnmower will probably start easier if you put a 10W-30 oil in it.
Good quality small engines can take a lot of abuse (and that's usually how they're treated)
However, running a full synthetic in a lawnmower or other 4-stroke small engine will
definitely prolong the life of the engine.
We run Amsoil 10W-30 full synthetic and have had excellent results.

$19.95 is our price for doing an oil change using Amsoil full synthetic 10W-30 small
engine oil which we believe is the best there is for this application.
Lawnmowers are air cooled motors and *HIGHLY* benefit from the use of a full synthetic
lubricant.
Most Lawnmower Brands and Models
including those powered by the popular Briggs and Stratton motor
Drain and replace motor oil
High quality 10W-30 full synthetic oil
NOTES: Manufacturers typically recommend SAE30 but SAE30 can be a bit thick for cold
weather starting. A 10W-30 is at the required SAE30 viscosity once the motor is at
operating temperature (which doesn't take long for lawnmowers).
We carry a wide variety of very high quality lubricants
We can substitute Amsoil for your brand oil choice for a small up-charge
When comparing prices, remember that a screening analysis of your used oil is
included in the above prices.

- THE SMALL PRINT -
The above prices apply to most non-riding, 4-stroke lawnmowers.
Most shops and dealerships charge well over $50 to do an oil change and most require
that you leave your lawnmower with them for at least a day... sometimes longer.
Oil changes are usually a sideline for these folks... they are not lubrication experts
nor do they claim to be. They typically use "average quality" lubricants that they
are able to buy in bulk at a low cost.
We do not disparage our competition but engine lubrication is our passion, not
a side business. Even our low cost "House" brands are typically MUCH better quality
products than the stuff most shops offer. Owners who really understand and care about
lubrication come to us because they know that we only use the best lubricants that are
out there.
We'll start work on your lawnmower as soon as you show up, with or without an appointment.
The oil change will take 20 minutes or so.. You'll be on your way with a smile for
something VERY close to our advertised price. Is that a deal or what?
What does "Express oil change" mean?
We don't believe that nickel-and-diming customers is the way to build a business.
If you need "something special", a drain plug washer or whatever, you'll still be out
the door with a smile for something very close to these advertised prices.
If you're not totally happy, you won't come back and you won't recommend us to your
friends.
"Doing The Right Thing" is good for you and it's good for us!
We will change your old oil FAST and for a lot less dough than you'd pay most anywhere
else!
All of our lubricants meet and usually far exceed Manufacturer's recommendations.
